Naval Security

The problem of protecting goods while at sea has existed for as long as the oceans have been plied for commerce, and it is a problem that is on the increase in the modern world.

Seaborne piracy against transport vessels remains a significant issue (with estimated worldwide losses of up to $16 billion per year), particularly in the waters between the Red Sea and Indian Ocean, off the Somali coast, and in the Strait of Malacca and Singapore, which are used by over 50,000 commercial ships a year.

The challenge faced by the owners of transport vessels is how to protect your cargo, crew and vessel.  There have been an increasing number of occasions where crews have foiled pirates by withdrawing into a citadel. Without gaining control of the vessel, or being able to physically capture seafarers, the pirate’s position is weakened and they have often been forced to withdraw.

The key to an effective citadel, apart from the immediate security for the crew and passengers is the ability to communicate with the outside world from within the citadel wherever the vessel is located.  Iridium, with its worldwide footprint offers the ideal solution and eXtrac are able to deliver a range of on-board communications solutions that ensure connectivity is always maintained.
