Kilimanjaro Challenge

eXtrac are proud to sponsor four Veteran Footballers from Axbridge in Somerset, Ian Fake, Simon Powell, Chris Crompton and Paul Ainsworth, who recently climbed Kilimanjaro at the beginning of June 2012.

The challenge originally started out as a Bucket List objective as Ian reached 50 in June, but the self funded trip soon took on a different feel. With training starting in earnest in February, the local Mendip Hills were soon severely trampled.

The Axbridge Saxons Football Club players performed various fund raising activities which will be used to help purchase a new powered wheelchair for Tom Ainsworth. The new innovative design of this wheelchair will enable Tom to drive the chair from any position, even standing. So now he is 18, he can now order a pint at the local pub, while standing up!!

Lou and Paul, Tom’s parents, have managed to secure 80% of the cost through an amazing charity called ‘Cauldwell Children’ and 10% from the Treloar Impact enhancing mobility charity. The Kilimanjaro Challenge set out to raise the extra 10%. However, in order to support these amazing charities, the event looked to raise more than the 10% required for Tom since these charities have been fantastic for Tom in the past.

eXtrac loaned the team tracking devices, so that their friends and families could track their progress during the climb. The devices will provide 2 way text messaging so that the friends and family can stay in touch with the intrepid explorers.  In a note to David Harris, Chris Crompton said ‘Many thanks to David and eXtrac for their support, plus a donation which will be passed on to the fund’.

Tom is now a proud owner of his new chair, and it is a fantastic device, although I think L plates may be in order for a little while!
